UK singer Alice Russell has opened up about her encounters with the late Amy Winehouse and discussed her own challenges to stay on the right path.

The neo-soulstress' music is often compared to that of Winehouse, who died of alcohol poisoning in 2011 after a long, documented stuggle with substance abuse. But Russell has a different memory of the tabloid-fodder artist.

“I met her briefly,” she said. “At that point, she was actually totally sober. We were tucking into the band's booze supply and meeting her band. She popped in for a little bit and she seemed really tender and quite shy.”

Russell believes that Winehouse didn't know or understand what she wanted out of her life and career.

“If I think about what I was like at that age... It's easy when you're about 21 or 22, maybe a bit older – you can really flip out. You still don't really know who you are. I used to go on terrible benders – but I was younger and had friends.”
