Brisbane indie-soul troubadour Graham Moes has a brand new name for his collective of musicians — The Petrichor — and it's a particularly fitting moniker given the refreshing sounds of ebullient new single The Helm, proudly premiering on theMusic.com.au today.
In case you're not a word nerd, "petrichor" refers to the "pleasant smell that accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather" (thanks, Google!), and the strains of The Helm are a similarly enjoyable experience, particularly if you've been experiencing your own musical drought of late.
Big hooks, big horns, honeyed vocals, and driving, contagious rhythms propel the song's fundamental, uptempo groove, which explodes out of its restrained, minimalist intro to grab the listener with its immediacy, polish and poise.
Despite the levity of the soundscape itself, Moes has woven in some thoughtful themes to the tune's lyrics, describing it as "a heartfelt expression of disheartenment surrounding the state of our political system, nationally and globally".

"In the lyrics, I refer to the aware and conscious musicians we fortunately have in our society, writing songs that bring social and political awareness to the population," he said in a statement.
The track follows Moes' debut album, Time & Tide, which landed in 2015 and has helped the musician sustain himself as a full-time performer, both in solo and full-band mode. He'll be appearing in the latter form at Brisbane's Bearded Lady on Saturday 6 May to launch the new single, in what will be the group's first outing under the collective Graham Moes & The Petrichor name.
