Live Review: The Love Junkies, Skullcave, Black Stone From The Sun - The Bird

The Love Junkies thrive off the locals at The Bird.

The Bird’s mezzanine floor was already heaving by the time Black Stone From The Sun took to the stage. They may have only been a two-piece, but they packed a massive punch.

The duo worked together seamlessly, filling the room with hearty, fuzzy guitar riffs and insanely catchy drum beats. Sean Mackay seemed to be having the time of his life, throwing himself around in time with the beat and providing a loud and grungy set of vocals that had the audience members at the front going nuts.

Next up were Skullcave, and at their first live gig, they showed heaps of potential in what was a very enjoyable performance. The trio certainly played a more gruelling style of grunge in comparison to the group before them – the riffs seemed to surge and swell – but it was welcomed by the audience, who found plenty of time to head bang. Keep an eye on these guys – their presence in the local grunge scene is only going to grow.

The Love Junkies took to the stage as the venue had packed itself out to the point where there were people having to wait in line outside and punters were standing up on the seating benches for a better view of the action. The experienced local trio seemed to thrive off that knowledge and launched into the set with full momentum. They were tight, composed and everything we could have possibly wanted as they transitioned into each song with ease.

They’ve developed a neat number of hits over the years, and tracks like Maybelene and final track, Oxymoron were huge plays during the set, while new single, Television was met with roars of approval and will certainly become a track to join the other two as a crowd favourite in time. The Love Junkies have proven to be one of Perth’s most exciting and consistent bands over the past couple of years and seem to just be getting better and better with each milestone they pass. Given the success of the evening and with an album around the corner, there’s still plenty more to look forward to.
