"At their best within the confines of the 'Chill Out' category on Spotify."

More Leisure Centre More Leisure Centre

The trendy Brunswick collective formerly known as The Do Ya Thangs have returned with a new moniker, Leisure Centre, and new album for 2018 by the name of Mind Full.

Like their previous releases, Mind Full will be a pleasant ride for anyone that's ever taken their 'good vibes' more seriously than most.

It's a mixed bag of an album, perhaps too long for its own good. There's certainly some effective moments of perfectly likeable funk pop on offer here, best shown on songs like Sucka or lead single Getting To Know. Production is also fantastic across the board, with the group's many vocalists popping in and out of the retro-synth landscape thanks to a punchy mix.

The random shifts in rhythm are interesting, as are the occasional bizarre melodies that chime in halfway through a tune. But ultimately these atonal adornments feel more like cheap attempts at kooky atmosphere rather than genuine moments of creative depth.

The mood that Leisure Centre establishes and maintains throughout Mind Full is likely to appeal to the more alternative fans of vocal groups like Pentatonix. But for everyone else, Leisure Centre are at their best within the confines of the "Chill Out" category on Spotify.
