"'Graffiti U' feels at times like Keith Urban is trying to hard to be something he's not."
Graffiti U explores Urban's transition from country to country hints of pop rock as he tries to get with the times.
Coming Home is born for the charts, a classic country tune modernised by synths and raised by Julia Michaels' graceful vocals. My Wave takes listeners to Jamaica with its funky beat and Shy Carter's rapping, while Way Too Long is a beautiful piano ballad showing Urban's raw side.
Gemini gives off an '80s country vibe with a hint of Michael Jackson's Thriller, filled with sultry lyrics like "She's a maniac in the bed / Brainiac in her head". On the other hand, Steal My Thunder is a little confusing. It's a dreamy country pop song, but seconds after the song finishes a random male singer starts up. It has literally nothing to do with the song.
Graffiti U feels at times like Keith Urban is trying to hard to be something he's not. He is great at country - and you can't fault his vocals, they are amazing - but his transition into other genres isn't always the most graceful.
