Album Review: Wilco - Schmilco

"Jeff Tweedy is still ruminating on what's going on."

More Wilco More Wilco

After the last couple of albums which featured the many moods of Wilco in all their sprawling glory, Schmilco is a different beast.

Mostly acoustic, mostly songs as short conversations. This is Wilco for a smaller room. Jeff Tweedy is still ruminating on what's going on in and around him, as the band stroll/shuffle/jog along beside him, still managing to leave some spaces. It's not entirely straightforward, of course: Cry All Day is ironically jaunty, Common Sense's rattly journey comes with some quietly discordant angles. They're never going to be Normal American Kids, but Wilco are always going to find a way to keep it interesting for their audience, and themselves.
