Album Review: Chris Cohen - As If Apart

"His innate knack for crafting deviously hook-laden songs in a lightweight fashion is undeniable."

The sun-blushed psych pop romanticism that has marked perennial experimental journeyman Chris Cohen's previous work is in full effect on second solo effort As If Apart.

You may not hear his Deerhoof or Ariel Pink sojourns in these '70s-era style, gently humming pop pastiches such as Memory or Sun Has Gone Away, but his innate knack for crafting deviously hook-laden songs in a lightweight fashion is undeniable. Torrey Pine and the title track are the perfect example of this — offering a Gallic breeziness that evokes languidity and suspense in equal measure. Deceptively delicious.
