"It's — as the name suggests — a complex record, and an excellent one at that."
For fans of The Besnard Lakes, there's been more than a little anticipation in the lead-up to the Montreal five-piece's fifth LP, and A Coliseum Complex Museum quickly proves it was worth the wait.
Upbeat, it's more driven than many of the band's earlier albums, relying more on a heavy rhythm section than the ethereal walls of sound that defined much of their previous work. Singer Jace Lasek's vocals still channel Brian Wilson, but Robbie MacArthur's guitar lines add bite to Golden Lion and brilliant closer Tungsten 4: The Refugee. It's — as the name suggests — a complex record, and an excellent one at that.
