"If you're still selling pop records in your 50s, why change the formula?"
What does the new Enya album sound like? Easy: it sounds like every other Enya album.
Dark Sky Island, like its seven predecessors, walks the fine line between poignant and boring. The hypnotic, swinging sway of The Humming... is the album's high point. Echoes In Rain is a pulsing pop gem, all plucked strings and 2009-era Glee. Contrast this with the album's title track: mournful, introspective, forgettable. Enya's been in the game three decades-plus. In that time there's been no progress, no development, no engagement with new influences. But if you're still selling pop records in your 50s, why change the formula?
