Album Review: Jeff Lynne's ELO - Alone In The Universe

"It's been a long time since ELO's spaceship passed through our corner of the Universe."

All those years ago, ELO with their Beethoven meets The Beatles meets Bach sound produced a string of hits with sweet and irresistible hooks and melodies that rivalled ABBA.

It's been a long time since ELO's spaceship passed through our corner of the Universe. Now billed as just Jeff Lynne's ELO and only featuring original keyboard player Richard Tandy, the outfit has largely lost the disco sparkle and rococo extravagances, applying their orchestral maneuvers to tunes that have a rootsy Travelling Wilburys vibe. The disco funk and swooning strings of One Step At A Time recaptures Lynne's glory days to feelgood effect.
