A previous incarnation had Mr Rateliff operating around a Bon Iver/Sam Beam folkish territory before bearding up, and brassing up the band, to pump out the slightly-retro soul-ly blasts of this.

The hip-swivelling, bent gospel of S.O.B. — that rightly centres the album — is an absolute stormer, and probably best thing hereon. But when the band clicks down a notch and finds a groove, as in Howling At Nothing or I'd Be Waiting, there's maybe a touch of classic-era Van Morrison about it, which is no bad model either.
