"Dilate is a promising step forward for this young band."
It’s been four years since Vessels’ last album and they’ve clearly been hard at work reinventing their sound.
Previous crescendo-driven, Explosions in the Sky-style post-rock affections have been replaced with modern electronic sensibilities, like a band-driven Four Tet or Caribou. The post-rock compositional aesthetic of layered tones and carefully placed moments of excitement are still present, yet they’re now channelled through a new, and exciting, modern electro-rock sonic palate. The album works best as a cohesive whole, yet is let down slightly by the more vocally-driven tunes. Despite this, Dilate is a promising step forward for this young band.
