Album Review: Songhoy Blues -- Music In Exile

"This is one African group you don’t need a goatee to appreciate."

More Songhoy Blues More Songhoy Blues

The album title is no exaggeration; Songhoy Blues really are in exile, as in 2012 their Malian town was invaded by jihadist militants who threatened to cut off the hands of anyone caught playing music.

Homesickness is, however, in short supply, the ripsnorting opener, Soubour rattling along like classic rock’n’roll. The production, by Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Nick Zinner, is sparkling and the songs should be strong enough to break through the language barrier into commercial success. This is one African group you don’t need a goatee to appreciate.
