"This suffers from a claustrophobic feeling."

The Wave Pictures are a great band. Unfortunately, this is not the English group’s best album.

While their previous work has been charming and uncluttered, this suffers from a claustrophobic feeling, most obviously in the lyrics co-written by fellow Britain, Billy Childish. Singer David Tattersall’s writing has always been introspective, but here is taken to impenetrable new levels. Every phrase seems to have a simile or mixed metaphor running through it. The band lay down some energetic grooves, but the album feels like it could’ve benefitted from a more considered approach.
