Fraser A. Gorman SXSW Diary: Part Five

24 March 2015 | 11:42 am | Fraser A. Gorman

You made it out of Austin alive, Fraser. A bit wet and hungover, but alive.

Deja vu hits my skull. Big time.

Again I'm dragging myself through downtown Austin with a hangover strong enough to kill a small Shetland pony.....

I walk into the Aussie BBQ looking so disheveled that the lady at the gate offers me a breakfast taco, which I decline. Which prompts her to tell me in her southern drawl "honey, you look like you need one..."

I keep walking.

The Aussie BBQ is quiet and cold but I don't mind cause I'm living inside my sore, cloudy mind.
A few delegates roll in and my UK booking agents buy me a coffee (bless 'em).
I crack through the set, warming up as I go along. I get a nice reception from the crowd and then I split outta there to the Panache showcase at Hotel Vegas, East Austin.

Thanks to Nick O'Byrne and Katie Besgrove for escorting me there, and to most gigs actually. Don't know what I would have done without them.

The Panache gig is short and sweet, lovely to catch up with Michelle and Josh, it was kinda like playing in a big loungeroom.

As the rain came pouring down, myself and my friend Lucy walk down to a house where I was lucky enough to record a live session for the awesome blog, Daytrotter.

My voice was a bit crackly after five gigs in three days, but I pulled it together and the team were really great to work with. It'll be up online in a few weeks. They draw a funny portrait of you for the website too. I was really honoured to be asked to do a Daytrotter, check them out they are really cool.

And then I'm done for SXSW, all gigs and things done. I'm a bit wet and hungover but it was an absolute blast. I have a quiet beer and listen to a Steve Earle record.

That night we head back to South Austin. I meet my friend Mary who we met earlier in the week wearing a whoopee cushion costume...
We go to the legendary Continental Club (my tourist request), a venue that has held some amazing gigs from Sonic Youth to Lucinda Williams. We see some really awesome country bands, Buxton and another really cool one whose name I forget. You couldn't wipe the smile off my face if you tried.

Mary has a band called Bumpin Uglies so we exchange some merch and she's drops me home (legend) to the CB house.

Now I'm in Austin Airport and it's Saturday.

Thanks SXSW. It was a good time. I'll see you again Austin.
