Darwin-based indie pop act At The Dakota are two days off from releasing their new EP, Melt, and have given theMusic.com.au readers a little head start with an exclusive premiere and track-by-track of the release today.

With singles Arrow Holder and Go My Way already released, the band are getting psyched to tour the EP nationally starting this weekend in Darwin.

Check out the track-by-track from the band below and head to theGuide for full details on At The Dakota's upcoming tour.

CHARLIE

This is essentially a love song about a girl I met a year ago. I was feeling a little lost and partying too hard when this angelic face came into my life. The song delves into meeting this girl and my feelings and thoughts about how I wasn't good enough for her. Charlie is my inner demon and he's basically telling me she's way out of my league and I should just leave her alone no matter how she makes me feel. The song is about ignoring those negative thoughts and following your heart to what you want.

GO MY WAY

This is our sing along song, for sure, that I really want to get stuck in people's heads. When we jam this song we always end up dancing around like idiots and it's probably my favourite song on the EP. After we had recorded, this was the song that stuck out to me. I love the little chime/bell that you hear coming through every now and again. It tells a story of falling out of love and that lost feeling you have as you pick up the pieces. It also relates to feeling like you're different because you're not living how others say you're supposed to live. The chorus pleads to an unknown entity, wanting someone to want them for who they are.

BRAIN MATTER

Jaxon came up with the chords to this song and we immediately jumped on it. I love the floaty feel of this song yet it is still quite punchy. This song is also my dad's favourite so it gets a tick. Lyrically it is about my recent struggles with anxiety and all the over-thinking and self doubt that goes with it. I love the time change and instrumental part later in the song which I think captures how my brain feels so flustered and manic sometimes.

ARROW HOLDER

This is the newest song on the EP. It wasn't finished musically or lyrically at the time of recording so we just took in what we had to the studio and went from there. It gave us a lot of room to work with our producer Ben and come up with different ideas which was cool in itself. It's almost a very complex song but it is fun to play and that's where we were going with this one. An arrow holder is the little guy in life. He always holds the arrows for someone else to shoot and get the glory. He's a dreamer, he's jealous, he wants more.

like a buffalo

Our oldest song on the EP. This was written as our last EP was being completed so it's been around for a while. We love this song and it's been a staple in our live set for the past 18 months. It's one of our closing songs and one of our favourites so we had to have it on this EP. It's an ode to where we've been in a record that aims to move us forward. The song itself is about those dodgy friends we have that always get themselves and you into trouble. I've got a number of mates that are just animals and it's a shout out to them. It's saying as much as we've gotten ourselves into trouble over the years that I thank you for it and I wouldn't change a thing.
