Eat/Drink Focus: Duck Day Afternoon At Belleville

What is Duck Day Afternoon?

Duck day afternoon is our excuse to throw some of our favourite things all into one day: delicious duck dishes, mad men style cocktails, rock'n'roll and Al Pacino!

What are some of the dishes you'll be serving up and what would you recommend?

Chinese Roast Duck Pancakes with chilli plum, Sticky Duck Wings and a Peking-Style Poutine with slow roasted duck leg and hoisin aioli amongst others. It's all designed to share so get a little nibble of all, and you can't go wrong.

Why duck? What's duck got over other meats?

Because Duck is the delicious emperor of the bird world and deserves to be worshipped accordingly!

What kind of entertainment will there be?

To capture the zeitgeist of the '70s, local band from 7pm Owl Egg Omelette & The Skinks will play a special film-themed rock performance. One half of Tek Tek Ensemble, the rock trio has specially created a costumed set inspired by the film and our duck menu. Hatched in a golden fry pan on a lonely cloud mountain, Owl Egg Omelette & The Skinks is a sneaky, slightly surreal side project for Paul Dornau,Carrie Webster and Katherine Karvess (Tek Tek Ensemble, Johnnie and the Johnnie Johnnies, and Sugarfed Leopards). On blue moons and solar eclipses they descend from their shady abode to play steamy music for warm humans, perfect for solving mysteries or slinking around.

When and where is the event?

Melbourne's new spiritual home of beautiful birds, Belleville. We're above ANZ at the Little Bourke/Swanston intersection gates to Chinatown. Entrance via rear laneway: Globe Alley. If you would like lift access give us a buzz on 9663 4041 and we'll happily organise that for you.

Saturday 23rd May, ALL DAY: Duck delights will be available from when we open at 11am, with the Dog Day Afternoon film being screened throughout. 7pm live music performance by Owl Egg Omelette & The Skinks, with mobster inspired tunes spun on the decks by Mike Gurrieri from 9pm-1am.

What else is coming up at Belleville we should know about?

The winter is coming! So we're warming up with a few special Sunday events.

Part of Melbourne Food & Wine Festival's Roast Collection celebrating local Victorian produce & beverages, our event "Mum's Making a Sunday Roast" (remember that Naomi Watts & Tom Cruise ad from the 90's?) is a twist on Mum's trad Sunday roast with an Asian kick to it. We're celebrating our hidden-in-plain-sight location at the gates of Chinatown with an Asian fusion menu: our famous miso butter glazed rotesserie chicken with house chicken gravy, water chestnut and orange stuffing, five spice and honey baby carrots, wok tossed broccoli with lap cheong and house made XO sauce, quail egg Yorkshire puddings and Korean style roast sweet potato with black sesame are the feature dishes accompanied by gravy boat cocktails & bee-hived live music babes. "Sorry Tom, Mum's making a Sunday roast!" Sunday 7th June, Queen's Birthday long weekend.

If you can't make Mum's Sunday Roast, the following week "House of Soul" is our other major Sunday event in June, on the 14th. Live disco/house/soul ensemble LE SOUL are back at Belleville having launched our space with us at the end of February - picture soul food, cocktail & beer specials to the soundtrack of some of Melbourne's live music masters.  LE SOUL amassed a cult following that packed out the house with hot chicken wing eaters and dancers in their previous Sunday residency at Temperance. In the studio making music and internationally touring ever since, LE SOUL have been itching to bring back a sweet Sunday session so sizzling you'll swear it's summer!
