Music industry to collapse after reality TV show pulls out of Australia

The Australian music industry is in a state of panic today after reports that one of the most popular reality talent quest TV shows is intending to pull out of the country by 2015.

Although the identity of the show has not yet been confirmed, the news has spread like fire by word-of-mouth this afternoon and shows like Australian Idol, Young Talent Time and Popstars have been suggested as possibilities for the shows that won't be returning.

“If a reality TV show pulls out of the country, it will probably create a domino effect that will see all of them move offshore,” a panicked executive who did not wish to be named told SPA Confidential today.

“And if we lose the reality TV shows, the whole music industry will collapse. They're the lifeblood of the Australian industry and if they go it puts immense pressure on suppliers.”

A music industry commentator told SPA Confidential that Australia should prepare for a future without Australian acts.

“It's cheaper to let other countries nurture talent, so I can't see the Government stepping in here,” he said. “We'll probably import everything from musicians and roadies, to publicists and journalists from countries like Thailand and India where they're cheaper to train.

“It should be a smooth transition, thought. Looking at the number of locals in the singles chart at the moment, it should be possible for the industry to move everything offshore without the wider public knowing.”
