Tony Martin

"Martin (and perhaps the audience) found a new groove that allowed for being older and a little less up for late night shenanigans."

Australian broadcast comedy fans of a certain age can't go past Tony Martin's work, really. D-Generation, Late Show, Martin Molloy — all champagne comedy.

His return to stand-up is far from a greatest hits (although there was a lovely reference to a "pissweak world") — and his development of comedic story reminded that he's never been far away from a funny yarn. This said, tonight took a while to find its stride, as Martin (and perhaps the audience) found a new groove that allowed for being older and a little less up for late night shenanigans. The shining stars of his craft still remain, however, with no one working a crass pun to greater effect, as well as a well-timed poo joke that could have been a hack in anyone else's hands. Had it not been on a school night and with a bit more run up, this would have been top notch.
