"she’s reemerged with a lower, more sultry register, pushing beyond the twee-songstress pigeonhole."
French chanteuse Soko all but dropped off the radar a couple of years after 2007 hit, I’ll Kill Her, but she’s reemerged with a lower, more sultry register, pushing beyond the twee-songstress pigeonhole.
What sounds like that familiar pout (I Come In Peace, Who Wears The Pants??) soon gives way to a sometimes dreamy (Bad Poetry), sometimes post-punk vibe (My Precious), but always with a lo-fi wash, taking none of the shine off her songs. There’s much to like but the real beatnik gems are hidden in the back half, notably Visions and Fantastic Planet.
