Album Review: Sinkane - Mean Love

He connects the dots between afrobeat, dub, jazz and soul with a certain retro ’70s appeal.

More Sinkane More Sinkane

Sinkane’s fourth long-player offers ten low-slung grooves that work soft and soothing laidback funk vibes. The son of Sudanese diaspora settled in the States, Ahmed Gallab’s work as Sinkane has intercontinental reach as he connects the dots between afrobeat, dub, jazz and soul with a certain retro ’70s appeal.

Yet the most astonishing part of this equation is the sweet soulful inflection of Gallab’s vocals which bring to mind Marvin or Curtis – they drip like honey and are smothered all over the mix. Gallab has single-handedly recorded this album which documents the emergence of a unique talent.
