Live Review: Seth Sentry, Citizen Kay, Coin Banks

14 March 2015 | 12:25 pm | Melissa Borg

Truth bombs about milk and a Frenzal Rhomb cover mixed in with hits.

More Seth Sentry More Seth Sentry

Was Coin Banks a rapper or just a hype man? Undiscernible in the first five minutes of his set, running onto the stage with a call and response chant of “I love hip hop!”. When he jumped into his rhymes no one seemed too disappointed that they didn't know the words or that the beats were being played out of a laptop. Rarely is a warm up act this fun.

Next up was Citizen Kay, who just seemed to be having a lot of fun onstage. With a DJ in tow, he used his slot to air some familiar tracks, keeping crowd energies high.

The sold-out crowd was keen as Seth Sentry burst onto the stage with a set of new verses and Vacation. Seeming pleased with the mixing of his all ages audience, he split us into hippies and business shirts for My Scene. The mix was a bit out, with the bass frequently drowning out Sentry's rhymes, but luckily his natural storytelling abilities kept spirits high.

He fuelled the hate fire that the majority of us have for working in hospitality before laying down Thanks For Your Hospitality, stating all difficult customers deserved a Punch In The Face with a Frenzal Rhomb cover. Room For Rent kept the hate going, encouraging everyone to own up to his or her housemates about drinking their milk.

Sentry was feeling the love tonight, and decided we would attempt to crowd surf DJ Sizzle the entire length of Metro Theatre and back to stage, which by some miracle was a success. Rewarding the crowd with Dear Science, Campfire and their heaviest track, The Waitress Song, they ended the set with Run.

After a few chants, Sentry and Sizzle returned to encore with oldie Strange Lot, leaving the young crowd proud to be a part of Aussie hip hop.
