Live Review: Methyl Ethel, Reef Prince, Erasers

More Methyl Ethel More Methyl Ethel

Perth duo Erasers acted as an interesting but minimal backing track for the few who turned up early to take a peek. Neither great, nor bad, the two-piece won't really be committed to memory.

Meanwhile, second support Reef Prince was more interesting to say the least. Claiming to be a rapper, he had a lot of work to do to convince us, between his average backing tracks and distorted rhymes. He said he's been called obnoxious; this reviewer concurs, and would also add in erratic and inconsequential.

Thankfully, Methyl Ethel saved the day with their dreamy shoegaze pop laden with luscious electronics. Having honed their skills over the last few years, the three-piece were in fine form, showcasing the pop sensibilities of their newest release Everything Is Forgotten, as well as harping back to more psychedelic times of Oh Inhuman Spectacle.

Jake Webb's crooning, gender-fluid vocals mixed with stimulating soundscapes proves to be popular — this was the first of three sold out shows in Sydney this week.

Keeping it short and oh so sweet, Methyl Ethel delivered an idyllic, crowd-pleasing set. From the driving guitar riffs of No 28, to the mind-bending soundscape and flawless falsetto of Shadowboxing; there wasn't a note out of place.

Expectedly, Twilight Driving was a highlight, and entailed a generous use of synths and an epic saxophone solo that saw the audience bring out their best daggy '80s dance moves.

The three-piece chose the encore-less route to end their set (ignoring our pleas), but definitely left the best 'til last. They whipped out groovy Drink Wine and pop-laden Ubu, leaving us with the 'Why'd you have to go and cut your hair? Why'd you cut your hair?' earworm spinning through our heads for the rest of the night and into the next morning.
