"A denser sound for darker topics, but don’t call it a comeback"
There’s no better way to describe Mavis Staples’ recent success than as a renaissance.
Her career has been boosted through her Jeff Tweedy collaborations, the soul and gospel singer’s last two albums in particular acclaimed as contemporary classics. The sparseness of this recent work is less present on EP, Your Good Fortune, the production being handled by notable soul artist Son Little. He also wrote the title track and Fight, placing a blues influence and socially critical songwriting style behind Staples’ singing. A denser sound for darker topics, but don’t call it a comeback.
