"Sweat and deep-bass rhythms were all that Matt and Alex needed to keep their fans frothing."
The first of the 5 RAVES IN 5 DAYS was held on the West Coast in the city of Perth - for those exhausted from a weekend of constant partying, it was an opportune moment to make it to daybreak on a Monday evening as well; four-day weekend anyone? A show that Hunter S. Thompson wouldn't sneeze at, Amps was packed to the brim, so full that reaching to the front of the stage involved traversing through a condensed pile of sweat-drenched bodies. Sweat and deep-bass rhythms were all that Matt and Alex needed to keep their fans frothing.
Featuring DJ sets from a plethora of local acts from Perth, it felt like one giant house party. Guest appearances include Tired Lion, San Cisco and rapper Drapht, who ripped out a righteously dank hip hop set while smashing house-beats. Even on stage, the guest DJs were overtly casual and didn't feel too constrained to act 'sensible', everything just felt exceptionally loose and carefree. It was just one giant joke-fest, feeling a physical manifestation of Matt and Alex's one-liners while on air.
As the night wore on, peak crowd surfing was beginning to occur and the skyline of the crowd was clad with numerous punters atop each other's shoulders. It felt at times that Matt and Alex were treated as messianic figures, think Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam but with way more pingers. With Dolphin inflatables being thrown around, Alex sported a cardboard sign detailing 'Slave to the Rave'. No doubt it was true, as everyone in the venue were encapsulated by the hypnotic rhythms exacerbated by their hosts. The two were very much qualified to take a career in the EDM scene, maybe transcending from Breakfast hosts to stadium-filled raves.
The inevitable moment of the night was the playing of Darude's Sandstorm, with all the Tune Rags and legionnaires caps fluttering amongst the crowd, it was clear the track would see its moment of glory. As soon as the distinctly sharp features of the song cut across the venue, the crowd went mental. The rave finished up with San Cisco tying off some beats. At this point the night had become a spectacle and with Scarlett from the band donning the headphones, things got pretty heated at the front. It was a night for many of the inebriated punters to (hopefully) remember.
