Live Review: Nocturnal Sunshine ‘Believe' Ft. Chelou

‘Believe’ ft Chelou by NOCTURNAL SUNSHINE is the newest release to come from the powerhouse better known as UK producer, Maya Jane Coles. Coles has always reserved her side project Nocturnal Sunshine for her more downtempo, dub beats - and this latest track truly hits the mark.

‘Believe’ takes her into darker territory than usual, but she knows how to work it. Newcomer Chelou’s vocals are soft and smooth against the dark bass and ominous beat. Top it off with a catchy little synth and very slick sounding production and you have a winning combination. Fans of dark, edgy dub will be instantly drawn in by this song's haunting appeal. Coles has previously remixed songs for Massive Attack and Gorillaz and the trip-hop influence is evident here. She achieves the same kind of minimal, yet powerful effect of many of Massive Attack’s mid-to-late nineties tracks.

This is the second single released so far off Nocturnal Sunshine’s forthcoming (and long-awaited) debut album, but the side project was actually started back in 2010 with the release of two originals, 'Can't Hide the Way I Feel' and 'Meant to Be'. It may have taken five years for new material, but all the evidence so far indicates that this will be a killer album.

Nocturnal Sunshine’s Self-Titled album will be released through her own label I/AM/ME on May 25th.
