Swimming in a sea of reverb, LYYAR (lee-ar) is Luke De Zilva, Nick De Lorenzo, Henry Newton and Patrick Ewing, four friends from Sydney whose sound is dark, bold and brash.
Nestled between the grooves of their 10’’ Ep, recorded at Vintage Sounds in Sydney and released through Speak N Spell Records, Outside Elsewhere shows a different angle of LYYAR; a softer, smoother side accentuating the atmospheric elements of their sound.
Unlike the chaotic howl of their live shows the record often floats, guitar melodies weaving their way through winter's eve seem sharper, shinier and much more polished but while they sound great, I can't help but feel like an element of the band is misplaced along the way.
As an Ep Outside Everywhere is only a glimpse of what LYYAR have in store for us. It sounds fantastic, but to really appreciate what LYYAR are capable of, you have to see these guys live, that’s where the magic is.
