ristin Kontrol may sound like a new name to you, but this is only because in a past life she was known as Dee Dee from the Dum Dum Girls. If you don’t know much about them, educate yourself, and if you do, you know that her debut under this moniker must be fabulous.

There is something very 80’s about the ‘Show Me’, in a very good way. Saxophone is featured, meshing in with synth and layered lyrics and ballad-esque percussion. There is a groove going on that makes you picture Molly Ringwald having her moment in fishnets and fluoro in a John Hughes film. It’s bloody beautiful.
Kristin Kontrol (who’s original name, despite a few incarnations, is Kristin Welchez) has a voice that is part smokey, part sexy; it’s basically a smouldering fire, ready to burst into flames again at any moment.

This solo endeavour came about almost through failure in some ways. Sitting down to write an album for the Dum Dum Girls she felt she wrote a series of the worst songs she had ever concocted, so decided to take things in a new direction. If ‘Show Me’ is anything to go by this solo career is going to be full of delightful surprises and well worth keeping your eyes on.
Kristin Kontrol’s debut album, X-Communicate will be out May 27th through Intertia's imprint Sub Pop. Keen beans can pre-order it here.
