Album Review: Kid Rock - First Kiss

StarStarHalf Star

"'First Kiss' is bubblegum nostalgia par excellence."

First Kiss, both the album and its title track, is bubblegum nostalgia par excellence.

Rock’s transition from C-grade rapper to B-grade Bryan Adams impersonator has been as surprising as it’s been complete. He still likes to party though, as he proves here with Good Times, Cheap Wine, Drinking Beer With Dad and Ain’t Enough Whiskey. And why wouldn’t he? Few people get a second chance at a music career. Sadly, this celebratory attitude prevents our host from conveying the bittersweet melancholy that would’ve elevated this trip back in time beyond being merely adequate.
