Live Review: Dusky 'Love Taking Over'

Like many purveyors of house—indeed, like many electronic artists in general—there is relatively little online information to be gleaned on London duo DUSKY, despite their having churned out seven EPs and six singles over the last few years.

Perhaps this trend can be attributed to the fact that house, a genre rarely even indulging in more than the barest of lyrical loops or wordplay, speaks for itself.

More often that not, you simply don't need to know the backstory behind these faceless artists—you don't need to know what DAFT PUNK or DEADMAU5 look like; you don't need to know what YELLE or the female vocalist in RIOT IN BELGIUM's 'La Musique' are going on about. House is for the body more than the brain; more about physical pleasure than intellectual expression. It's why nightclubs crank these kind of beats to sweating, heaving masses the world over—minds numbed and bodies singing on fathomless amounts of chemical intoxicants. Put loosely and slightly reductively: if house has you dancing, job done.

DUSKY will have you dancing. 'Love Taking Over' will have you dancing.

It's that healthy layering of deep house beatitude and frantic percussion chops, all the while sprinkled over with that typical lyrical loop: "love taking over". If one could invest some kind of significance to those simple words, it would probably be a mere summation of what this track feels like: a slowly building, slowly engrossing electro medley that sinks its claws deep over the six-and-a-half minute sprawl. Don't overthink it: just enjoy.
