Album Review: Current Swell - Ulysses

StarStarStarHalf Star

Keys To The Kingdom is a little gem, while Sideways has a compelling loose swagger.

Part-rock, part-pop and with lashings of bluesy guitar jams, Canadian roots quartet Current Swell have crafted an accessible record with Ulysses. The sound is in a commercial sweet spot, a mix of early Coldplay (Gunshots) and Kings of Leon via John Butler (Rollin'). The songs are tightly written, like the instantly likeable One Day I'll Be Rich, but the real strength comes when the blues and rock side takes centre stage. Those are moments of real fun too – Keys To The Kingdom is a little gem, while Sideways has a compelling loose swagger.
