"Already in peak comedic condition, it will be incredibly exciting to see where the duo go from here."
High upon the dirt mound of the comedically bizarre sits Blake Everett and Oliver Coleman. A new addition to the world of the double act, the two have spent the last few years building solid fan-bases with their own very differing brands of comedy. When the two come together, however, it’s as natural as a hole in the ground.
Taking the guise as sibling shovel salesmen, the two quickly derail proceedings with meta-performances, fourth wall breaking and some inspired audience participation. It’s difficult to explain the trajectory of the show without giving away spoilers, but then again, it’s difficult to actually explain what went on at all.
Whilst the comedians in question have always delivered quality performances as solo acts in the past, the show reaches joyous heights in seeing them create something greater than the sum of their respective parts. Everett, in particular, has never really journeyed into the world of surrealist comedy before - tending to stay in the confines of traditional musical standup. Here, however, he has pushed himself well and truly out of the box to craft obscure characters, absurd non-sequiturs, and ridiculous twists and turns throughout his time onstage. As for Coleman - the seasoned of the two when it comes to outright silliness - the comic is at the top of his crazy game as the consummate randomist that he is.
Blake Everett & Oliver Coleman Dig Their Own Graves is a show that, by its nature, will continue to get tighter and weirder as their run progresses. Already in peak comedic condition, it will be incredibly exciting to see where the duo go from here. Dig it.
