"Lucas's show is refreshing and endearing."
The Acacia Room in the Victoria Hotel is a very nice name for a "slightly dingy basement". Nonetheless, every single seat has a bum on it as Lucas, dressed in an oversized smock that makes her look more like she's on the way to an art class than to her own comedy show, takes the stage and commands the people's attention for 50 minutes — a span of time that whizzes by.
She is young, in look, voice and attitude, and this gives her humour a very different perspective, compared to the long-established but jaded 40-somethings who do the rounds every year at the MICF. It may be deemed 'millennial humour'; the comedy of someone to whom everything in life is still quite new. But this makes the jokes fresh, different and pleasingly droll in a hipster kind of way.
In fact, her whimsical delivery alone is damn funny, let alone the words she is saying and the yarns she is spinning. Lucas's humour strays into sexual and slightly crude territory at times, but does not rely on this for a cheap laugh, and that is a very good thing, with so many comics relying on this type of try-hard shock material for their gags. She also deals with some good-natured hecklers in the crowd, and brings her audience into a joke on occasion, with tasteful and humorous aplomb.
