Garth Ennis & Steve Dillon's celebrated adult graphic novel gets the small-screen treatment at last

After a protracted developmental process, AMC has finally lifted the veil on its forthcoming adaptation of celebrated '90s graphic novel Preacher, airing the first full trailer for the series during this past weekend's episode of fellow comic-book series The Walking Dead.

The road to AMC's Preacher — developed for the network by Evan GoldbergSeth Rogen and Sam Catlin, and starring Dominic Cooper as the titular man-of-god, Jesse Custer — has been a long and convoluted one; the original series was written by renowned comics scribe Garth Ennis, with illustrations by seasoned artist Steve Dillon, and ran for 75 issues (66 monthly plus one-shots and specials) from 1995-2000 on DC Comics' adult imprint, Vertigo. Before AMC came along, the story had gone through no less than three previous big- and small-screen reimaginings, having originally landed with Electric Entertainment as well as Miramax Films before being handed to HBO, who ultimately passed on the series and let the rights fall to Columbia Pictures, who were no more successful in bringing Ennis and Dillon's epic to the screen.

At last, though, we have our adaptation, with the official synopsis from AMC painting a picture that — at least as far as the base premise goes — nicely reflects the set-up of the graphic story: "Preacher is the story of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), a conflicted preacher in a small Texas town who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that allows him to develop a highly unconventional power. Jesse, his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth NeggaAgents Of SHIELD), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph GilgunThis Is England) embark on a journey to, literally, find God."

To get a little more detailed, Custer comes to possess the Word Of God - the power to make anyone do what he says - after the 'mysterious entity' Genesis (actually the hybrid offspring of an angel and a demon) escapes from heaven and bonds to him. Determined to find answers, Custer, Tulip and Cassidy set off, yes, to track down God, all the while evading the pursuit of a family of violent hillbillies, an intolerant, abusive police officer, an enigmatic ancient order sworn to protect the bloodline of Christ and the spirit of vengeance itself.

Interestingly - for fans of the comics, at least - AMC's trailer doesn't give much away in terms of the overarching supernatural/religious elements of the show; although there are flecks of unsettling imagery dappled throughout the trailer, this preview keeps the deeper story's mysteries - and some of its best characters, such as the nefarious Herr Starr and the too-badass-for-words Saint Of Killers - obscured from view, at least for now.

Preacher is set to premiere on AMC mid-next year.
