Veteran Perth Radio Host Steps Down After A Decade

10 November 2014 | 12:13 pm | Staff Writer

Has spent two decades at the station in total

Established Perth community radio host Peter Barr will step down from his post on the RTRFM Breakfast show after ten years in the slot.

Barr, who won the Media Award at last Friday’s WA Music Awards (adding to his three Golden WAMi Awards), will finish up his ‘Breakfast With Barr’ slot in December.

“It’s the best gig in town but everyone sings a final song eventually, no matter how great a time you’re having,” Barr said. “I’ve had the best, wildest magical early morning ride ever.”

Barr started as a volunteer at the station in 1994 and has also been a producer of the mid-morning talk program ‘Morning Magazine’ since 2008. He also claims to have been the first person to play Pond on radio, as Adam Christou from the station said on a WA Music Conference panel over the weekend.

Barr will continue at the station in a part-time role as Talks Producer. RTRFM is now looking for a new breakfast presenter.

General Manager Jason Cleary said, “Peter has been a bastion of all the things community radio stands for; supporting local arts, culture, music, and providing a look at what is going on in Perth each day with his own inimitable style.

“Ten years is a long time to dedicate to presenting breakfast radio and the whole station wishes Pete the best for his future career. We are very happy to have him stay on board to produce and mentor our morning talks team. I hope listeners take the time to thank Pete for being there every morning and for being instrumental in making RTRFM what it is.”

The final ‘Breakfast With Barr’ will take place Friday 19 December after a week of special guests joining the show.
