"Tonight was the first time that I saw the film off of my laptop..."

Held at Parramatta Park for the first time ever this weekend, Tropfest 2017 was a rousing success and has crowned Sydney filmmaker Matt Day the winner this year.

His film, The Mother Situation, about three adult siblings assisting their terminally ill mother in committing suicide, took out the top prize, followed by Arielle Thomas & Ellenor Argyropoulos's Meat & Potatoes and Daphne Do's Wibble Wobble at second and third place respectively.

Day says of the win, "I didn’t expect this to happen. I was just really looking forward to getting my film in front of as many people as possible so receiving the win is just a bonus.

"Tonight was the first time that I saw the film off of my laptop and I do my own post-production work so I was just pleased that it all came together."

Tropfest founder John Polson said, "It has been another incredible year of Tropfest  and it has been amazing to see audiences come and enjoy the event at our new home in Parramatta Park, despite the extreme heat.

"I am thrilled that this year half of our sixteen finalists are women and while all sixteen films were truly outstanding, The Mother Situationhad the edge to take out the top prize."
