Australian independent dance label Sweat It Out Publishing have partnered up with Spotify to launch the EQUAL Writing Camp aimed at platforming underrepresented voices in the music industry. Bringing together some of Australia’s leading female and gender diverse talent in the dance music space, the camp will provide artists with the tools, mentorship and opportunities needed for them to succeed.

Directed by iconic Australian DJ, songwriter and producer KLP, the writing camp is set to take place over three days from Wednesday February 5th to Friday February 7th. Over these days, mentors will help provide a safe space for artists, songwriters and producers to create, collaborate, and shape the future of electronic and dance music, while working in a supportive, immersive and trusting environment. From studio sessions to industry-focused workshops, the EQUAL Writing Camp aims to assist emerging talent in up-skilling their songwriting chops and providing them with industry knowledge that’ll help develop their careers further, and build rudimentary networks with likeminded individuals.

When it comes to the importance of having diverse, women and gender expansive-fronted spaces in the music industry, KLP spoke on what she’s experienced over the years, stating: “Throughout my career, be it on festival line ups, writing camps or local club shows, there have only ever been a few experiences when I’m surrounded by more than a handful of other women and gender expansive artists at the one time,”

“It’s clear through ticket sales and the impact on the global stage, that Australian dance music is pushing boundaries and stronger than ever yet it’s undeniable that it’s still an incredibly male dominated space. I cannot wait to see the fierce creativity that comes out of having all of these absolute legends together making tunes.”

For music streaming service Spotify, the writing camp aligns with the company’s brand ethos of maintaining strength and community.

“EQUAL is about the power of uniting voices to champion equity in music and standing together to fight for a common goal,” they said. “It is much more than a program: EQUAL represents a mission and a community that stands together, so we are thrilled we could partner with Sweat it Out to deliver this exclusive writing camp for women and gender expansive artists in music.”
