More Silverchair More Silverchair

An upcoming SBS miniseries has reimagined one of Aus rock's most iconic tracks for their new gold rush-era miniseries.

New Gold Mountain chronicles the tensions between Chinese and European settlers in 1850's Australia during the height of the gold rush, while also serving as a tense murder-mystery series.

The show has also taken Tomorrow - the massive debut single from legendary rockers Silverchair - and reworked it into a hauntingly era-appropriate tune complete with traditional Chinese instruments and translated Mandarin lyrics.

"Translating the lyrics were certainly interesting, into Mandarin, singer Cat Stratton explains of the project. "'Fat boy' doesn't sing as well in Mandarin as it kind of does in English..."

Stratton continues, "It's such an iconic song, and it's a song that, like, my dad knows - which is just a testament to how iconic it is."

Music producer for the series Robby De Sa also added, "As soon as they said Silverchair I was like, 'yeah, I'm in,' because i'm a massive Silverchair fan. I was excited to try and do something different"

He goes on, "I think my role was socially to get something that was emotive enough for the scenes... we kind of developed these melodies that I think we had to get something that had a modern feel but was also that kind of nostalgic for the time period."

Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns shared his love for the cover, saying: “New Gold Mountain tells an incredible story and to have Cat and Robby reimagine Tomorrow in Mandarin is both inventive and inspiring - I love it.”

New Gold Mountain premiered last night and is available on SBS On Demand. Check out the song and the behind the scenes making of the track below:
