She’s had to pull the pin on her new album and all touring plans.

One of modern soul's most well-loved and powerful voices, Sharon Jones, has told fans today that she has been diagnosed with stage one bile duct cancer and, as such, has put all future career plans on hold for the time being.

The leader of Daptone soul sensations Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Jones has become something of a late blooming superstar of the modern soul genre. The slick but lively and authentic modern funk group have cut four albums and a slew of singles, but it's their highly energetic live show that has really seen the group win over fans around the world, including Australia where they have become major festival drawcards over the years.

The cancer has been detected in its early stages and doctors are confident the cancer is operable and curable. Even so, it has meant all touring plans have been put on hold, as has the release of the group's forthcoming LP Give The People What They Want.

“Over the last few weeks I haven't felt good and I didn't know what was going on.  We sadly had to cancel shows while I went through a series of tests and short hospital stays.   We just found out that I have a stage-one tumor on my bile duct.  Luckily we caught it really early and fast and the doctors say it's operable and curable!” Jones said in a statement issued to fans overnight.

“I will be having surgery very soon and will have to rest and recover.  I'll be staying in touch and keeping my fans and friends updated on my progress.  I'm looking forward to getting back on the road to give the people what they want!”

The cancer has not spread, but due to the invasive nature of the surgery required to cure it, Jones will be forced to rest up for an extended period of time.
