Record Labels’ Nightmare Comes True As Spotify Vulnerability Allows Users Free Downloads

Users were able to download anything they wanted from Spotify until today.

An extension on the popular Google Chrome browser has been allowing Spotify users to download any songs on the service, The Verge reports.

The extension Downloadify was said to exploit a certain vulnerability in the security of Spotify's web player, thus allowing anyone using the service to download a DRM-free version of any song available in the Spotify library.

The issue has been fixed now, but for a period of time after the vulnerability was discovered it was open slather for any users to raid the streaming services library; the ease at which DRM-free music could be accessed at no charge serving as something of a nightmare for record labels around the world.

The extension's creator Robin Aldenhoven stated on twitter that he was shocked to see Spotify had such little protection of their incredibly valuable library of songs.

He was quick to acknowledge that he did not want to harm Spotify, as he was a big supporter of their service.
