A different approach to stop people from littering

This is a very different way to get people to stop littering. Sydney's Randwick and Waverly Councils have teamed up to launch the Junk Jukebox initiative, which will kick-off tomorrow at Coogee Beach.

A special garbage bin has been constructed so that when a piece of rubbish is placed in it, a musician on a nearby stage will perform a song. And each time rubbish is put in this bin, the stage will rotate, with another performer stepping up to the plate to play a track. So basically, if you put your rubbish in the bin, you'll get to listen to some free music from a few local musos - sounds pretty good to us.

Taking part in the Junk Jukebox initiative will be Ash Grunwald, Leisure Bandits, Night Owl and The Dawsons. There will also be several guest speakers on hand during the two-day event, including Randwick City Council Mayor Scott Nash and Waverly Mayor Sally Betts.

The Junk Jukebox will be held at Coogee Beach tomorrow (Thursday 23 January) and then again on the Friday at Bondi Beach.
