The Empire Of The Sun frontman lost his spiritual way in NYC

More Empire Of The Sun More Empire Of The Sun

The city that never sleeps failed to have much of a creative impact on local EDM pioneers Empire Of The Sun, with frontman Luke Steele struggling to hold onto his "portal to God" while recording in NYC.

In a recent interview with the new-look Drum Media, Steele had an animated take on his less-than inspiring music-making experience in the Big Apple.

“New York is just like…” Steele looks away, as if confused, “Okay, I have this vision of this giant bulldog sitting over the city and growling.”

He laughs. “I know, I know, but like… it's this really heavy place. I feel like everyone has their portal to God, you know, their spiritual connection,” he says, shooting his hands high above his head. “But,” he sighs, “in New York, it feels like there is no room for your portal, so everyone's wires are crossed. It's weird.”

Steele also gave his explanation behind the name Lux - the opening instrumental track off their upcoming album Ice On The Dune.

“I always have dreams of woolly mammoths and I always thought that would be a cool name for a woolly mammoth to have - Lux.”
