More INXS More INXS

Iconic Aussie rock band INXS have announced on stage in Perth that the band is now officially over, with last night's performance their final one ever, according to reports.

Midway through the set at Perth Arena, where the band were providing main support to American MOR rockers Matchbox 20, drummer Jon Farris reportedly took the microphone from new singer Ciaran Gribbin and made the shock announcement to the thousands present, according to Fairfax.

Formed in Sydney in 1977, the band became one of Australia's biggest ever international musical success stories. Their most popular release, 1987's Kick, is certified six-times Platinum in the United States and multi-platinum in a multitude of territories the world over.

The band has had a revolving door of front men since the tragic passing of the legendary Michael Hutchence back in 1996, starting with Jimmy Barnes as a touring member in 1998, followed by Terrence Trent D'Arby, Noiseworks' Jon Stevens and reality TV contest winner JD Fortune. Their final album, a collection of cover versions of their earlier hits called Original Sin, was released in 2010 and featured a different vocalist on each track, from Rob Thomas to Ben Harper to Tricky to John Mayer.

Gribbin joined the group in September of last year after the band split with Fortune.

While fans of the band were often outspoken about the band's decision to continue without Hutchence, whose enviable songwriting smarts and legendary onstage behaviour was the focus point of the band throughout their most successful years.

Speaking with theMusic.com.au just hours after he was revealed as the band's new singer, Gribbin said he had no intention of trying to fill Hutchence's shoes.

“The man was an amazing singer, he could write amazing songs really heartfelt lyrics and he was an icon. All I can hope is that genuine fans of the band can see that I'm giving it 100 percent when I'm on that stage and I'm paying tribute to that era of the band and Michael.”

The band released 12 albums in their 35 year career.

LATEST: According to Central Coast radio station 2GO 107.7, Kirk Pengilly has denied the band will be splitting up.

Drum Perth reviewer Jake Dennis said the band were quite clear in saying that last night's show would be their last.

"They said it was their last show because they wanted to go out on a high and they wanted to do their last gig in Perth because they felt most at home here," he said.

A representative from Live Nation today told theMusic.com.au that they were unclear on what exactly is happening.

"I've asked them the question but I haven't had a response," they said.
