More Indiana Williams More Indiana Williams

Indiana Williams is probably a new name to you in the world of lush, sun-soaked indie pop. However, his recent move from Australia to the US aims to solidify his standing as a bonafide artist.

After the success of his debut EP, Digital Heartbreak, the Melbourne-native singer-songwriter has embarked on a thrilling new chapter in Los Angeles and has spent the last year adapting to the culture shock of LA’s vibrant and all-frills atmosphere.

From navigating the eclectic Hollywood queer-pop community to collaborating with LA natives, his journey has been one of artistic evolution and self-discovery.

In his latest single, The Valley, Indiana reflects on this new chapter in a new city, capturing both the excitement and challenges of his new environment.

As he bridges his Australian roots with his fresh experiences in the City of Angels, Indiana's music continues to resonate deeply, offering a unique perspective on love, life, and community. The Music chatted with Williams to delve into his year of anything but rest and relaxation and discuss the inspirations behind his latest work.

Insiders Guide To LA

Moving from Melbourne to Los Angeles was probably the most nerve-wracking yet life-changing experience of my life. The sheer magnitude of LA can be overwhelming, but there are pockets of the city that have a Melbourne-like flair, making me feel right at home. Silverlake, in particular, has a vibe that reminds me of Brunswick with its own unique, thrifted LA fashion charm.

For anyone thinking about making the jump to LA, my biggest piece of advice is to start building your community before you even get there. Whether it’s connecting with people through social media or asking friends in Melbourne if they know anyone in LA, it’s essential. You’d be surprised—despite being a big city, LA feels smaller than you’d think, especially within queer communities.

My latest single, The Valley, was inspired by my move to LA and how unexpectedly love found me—not just in a relationship but also within a community. I owe a lot to my friends in Australia, who guided me towards meeting some truly amazing people here in LA.

Favourite Cafe: Cafe Nido

LA is full of incredible cafes, but I’ve recently fallen in love with a hidden gem in Silverlake called Cafe Nido. It’s a serene space, perfect for sitting with a coffee and a good book. They even have a small library space, making it the ideal spot for some quiet time amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.

Favourite Place To Discover New Music

One of the best things about LA is the constant flow of new music. Shows pop up in the most unexpected places—unique bars, art spaces, you name it. It’s hard to pick a specific spot, but I always keep an eye out for what’s coming up. There’s something magical about discovering new sounds in unconventional spaces.

Favourite Spot To Find Inspiration

Inspiration can strike anywhere, but I’ve found that a good hike is the perfect way to gain a new perspective. Lately, I’ve been exploring different trails around the city, each offering its own unique view of LA. In these moments of solitude and connection with nature, I often find the spark for new ideas.

Favourite Spot For A Night Out: Precinct In DTLA

When it comes to a night out, Precinct in Downtown LA has become my go-to spot. Among all the queer bars in LA, this one made me feel welcome the moment I stepped through the door. Everyone is friendly, and it’s a place where people are there to have a good time, not just to be seen.

The Hidden Gems Of LA You Must Visit

To truly experience LA, you need to venture beyond the typical tourist spots. Explore the city’s lesser-known suburbs—from the charming neighbourhoods of the Valley, like Studio City, to the eclectic vibes of Ventura Blvd, Pasadena, and Echo Park. These areas offer a glimpse into where local Angelenos live and hang out, providing a more authentic LA experience than just doing the usual Hollywood tour.
