"It was kind of a crazy idea but I figured Mark could pull it off and it actually happened!"

How does one get one of this generation's most prolific punk figures into their music video? California's Day Wave  Jackson Phillips to his mum — is in town supporting Gang Of Youths on tour and can speak from experience, having scored blink-182 legend and world's-coolest-dad Mark Hoppus in his new video for Stuck.

Stopping by The Music's Sydney offices, Phillips explained how the friendship and music video came about.

"When I put out this song Drag like a year ago, he had reposted it and said, "I love this song" or something, and then he followed me on Twitter. I messaged him and we started talking and after a while, I remember thinking about what we could do for a music video for Stuck and he was always so funny in his music videos we thought, 'I wonder if he would be willing to do something with this', and I asked him on Twitter and he was like, 'Yeah, for sure!'

"We found a guy that would make the video and we asked if he had any ideas and he was like, 'I have this weird idea to parody this priest watching a Star Wars trailer!' I thought Mark could pull it off — it was kind of a crazy idea but I figured Mark could pull it off and it actually happened!"

The reaction video-style clip features Hoppus with headphones on sitting at his computer, traipsing to the edge of delirium many times as he excitedly narrates what he's watching. Phillips himself is sitting in the background, managing to keep his cool while Hoppus is lost in what he's watching. Given Hoppus' cheeky social media persona, we wondered whether Hoppus was watching a video at all or simply improvising his "reactions".

"He WAS watching something! He was watching a video that the director made, and it was a little, like, stop-motion with little collages… so everything he was describing was actually happening, which kind of changes the whole thing a little bit."

Day Wave still has a few shows left in the country — he's headlining Rad Bar in Wollongong on 14 April and follows Gang Of Youths to their shows in Adelaide, Perth and three shows in Melbourne.
