It’s no secret that Sydney’s nightlife has taken a massive hit since the introduction of lockout laws in 2014, but now two directors have shown exactly how much the legislation has affected the city in the form of a time-lapse short film.
Created using motion-control time-lapse technology, which moves the camera on three different axis as it takes photos, Closed Sydney depicts a number of once-popular hot spots such as The Flinders, Soho, Hugo’s Lounge and many more in their current state, after being forced to close thanks to the lockouts in the last 12 months.
Each shot took up to an hour to setup and shoot and the final product is a combination of over 3,800 individual stills. Filmmakers and founders of Sydney based production company Shifted Pictures, Dave May and Tim Pass, both have close ties to the local music scene and say the project is something they are passionate about.
"…When it came to actually going out and spending hours on those empty streets, that's when it really sank in," May and Pass said.

"Every other window has a ‘For Lease’ sign in it and it was just so eerily quiet.
"When we did run into locals they would just tell us that the place was ‘dead’ now. That it had lost its soul. It wasn't the Kings Cross they knew."
Art vs Science’s Jim Finn provides music for the video, with an original song entitled Goodbye Sydney.
