"The script exists."

For the last few years, talk of a sequel to the iconic 1988 comedy Twins hasn't gone away, but we now have a clearer idea as to where we are at in the film becoming a reality.

The film's stars, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, have openly talked about their desire to make Triplets, which would reportedly be based on the pair going in search of their long lost brother, played by Eddie Murphy

Speaking to The Music this month, US actor Josh Gad, who penned the script for the potential sequel, has given an update on the progress.

"The script exists," Gad confirmed.

"Arnold and Danny and, I believe, Eddie Murphy have read it and, I believe, loved it.

"It's about getting the movie financed at this point which I have nothing to do with. I've done my part and now the onus is on the collaborators whose project this is to go and do it."

The sequel was initially announced in 2012 by Universal Pictures and it is expected that the original film's director, Ivan Reitman, will return to co-produce if the film does eventuate.

"I wrote that script with my partner Ryan Dixon out of a complete love and admiration for Twins which was one of those movies that just spoke to me as a kid," Gad continued.

"It was sort of a love letter to those guys… I would love to see that movie made one day."

Twins was a huge success at the box office, raking in over $US215 million on a budget of just $US18 million.
