“F*cking GO!"

More Radiohead More Radiohead

Never one to mince his words when it comes to UK politics, Thom Yorke has unleashed following news Liz Truss has resigned as Prime Minister.

The announcement, which sees Truss the shortest-serving PM in British history, arrives after a very turbulent time in office.

Taking to Twitter, the Radiohead legend, who is always quick to comment around major political news, said:

A week ago, The Daily Star established a live stream of lettuce in a blond wig having a disco to see if it would have a longer shelf-life than the Prime Minister. You can only imagine the jokes it led to (“We need a general election... But they won't lettuce”).

Ian "H" Watkins of Steps fame tweeted “Fucking GO! Take the hint!” before revealing his delight via the lettuce:

Canadian punk rockers Pup, who are currently in the UK, pointed out: “second consecutive British PM to resign when we’re visiting England this year 🧐.”

“Somebody make a four-headed grim reaper meme with the doors having the former PM’s faces.”

With Boris Johnson a contender to claim his former title, there’ll be no shortage of commentary in the coming weeks.

Although if he is reappointed, comedians across Britain will have a wealth of material; Bill Bailey spent a significant amount of time focussing on Johnson during recent Aussie shows, despite the fact he was no longer in office.

Truss' statement arrived overnight:

We delivered on energy bills and on cutting national insurance.
We have continued to stand with Ukraine and to protect our own security.
And we set out a vision for a low tax, high growth economy – that would take advantage of the freedoms of Brexit.
I recognise however that, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.
I have therefore spoken to His Majesty The King to notify him that I am resigning as Leader of the Conservative Party.
There will be a leadership election to be completed in the next week.
This will ensure we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plans and maintain our country’s economic stability and national security.
I will remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen.
