Behemoth Frontman Faces Prison For Ripping Up Bible

A court has found Adam "Nergal" Darski has committed a crime.

More Behemoth More Behemoth

The Polish Supreme Court has found that Adam Darski, frontman of black metal band Behemoth and better known by his stage name of "Nergal", committed a crime in 2007 when he tore up a copy of the Bible and called the Roman Catholic Church a "criminal sect", accoridng to Reuters.

After a lower court heard the trial, the matter was sent to the nation's Supreme Court to rule on the argument that the frontman's intentions were not to directly offend anyone. It has found that, even so, Darski's actions, should he be found guilty of them, constituted a crime.

The matter will now be directed back to the lower court where they will find whether or not he is guilty. While the maximum punishment for such a crime is two years imprisonment, it is rare that anyone in Poland convicted of such a crime serves any jail time.

Former conservative member of parliament Ryszard Nowak has been one of Darski's most vocal opponents over the years and has said to Polish television that he feels vindicated by the Supreme Court's decision.

"The Supreme Court said clearly that there are limits for artists which cannot be crossed," he said.
