Local artists seeking a share in licence fees for their music which may have been broadcast or publicly performed are being encouraged to register with non-profit organisation Phonographic Performance Company Of Australia (PPCA) before the cut-off this month.

Each year the PPCA collects license fees from over 70,000 businesses across Australia that play sound recordings and music videos and distribute that income to registered recording artists and copyright owners.

This year's deadline to register is 31 August — those already registered are advised to notify the PPCA of all releases they are eligible to claim under the Artist Direct Distribution Scheme before the deadline.

The PPCA distributed $33 million to its registered artists and labels by the end of 2015.

"My PPCA cheque goes straight back into helping me make more music," acclaimed Aussie songwriter Paul Dempsey said.

"Whether it’s picking up another bit of studio gear, some wacky new instrument or by simply affording me time to put other things aside and experiment."
